a bit more about the project:
In September and October 2025, while the Sumud Flotilla was sailing from Genoa to Gaza, four graphic artists, Fulvio Ioan, Luisa Rognoni Apedistri, Sam Kerson and Katah met up in Genoa for a planned encounter and happening. The idea was to use the new studio of the two Genovese artists as a platform for a broader relationship in the world of artists’ books.
This portfolio, in an edition of 6, is the first effort of the new creative collective.
During our residential workshop there were large demonstrations, calling for an end to the Genocide in Gaza, in the streets and at various universities, while some high schools were occupied.
One of the central elements of our artistic residency in Genoa, was an invitation to create a collective mural at SMACC, San Marcellino Art and Culture Center, located on Cairoli in the heart of Genoa. This open workshop shared with the people of the SMACC Community produced a 6 x 12-foot collective mural, titled; The World is Watching. The central image of the mural is further developed in Sam’s graphic image included in this portfolio.
Katah, concentrated on her current inquiry into the Woman. Life. Freedom movement.
Fulvio, expressed his sense liberation, and desire for abolition and peace with an image of an extra planetary being arriving on a new earth. Il Ragazzo Venuto dalle Stella, (The Boy Who comes from the Stars).
Luisa’s image, La Liberta’ di essere Liberi (Freedom Means being Free) concentrated on Self liberation, as Luisa said, ‘day and night we search for freedom’.
All of the images were engraved in Linoleum, and printed by hand by Fulvio, with his special techniques, in the laboratorio of Fulvio and Louisa; near the sea in Genoa Cuatro. The 6 portfolios were assembled in Québec by Katah in her Atelier du Livre. Finally, the portfolios were shared equally; three to Italy and three to Trois-Rivières, Quebec.
